Dr Haitham Al-Haddad v Times Newspapers Limited

Terms of settlement have been reached in Dr Al-Haddad’s claim in libel against Times Newspapers Limited. The claim arose from an article which appeared in the Sunday Times on 22 December 2013 entitled, “’Asbos’ to silence 25 hate clerics” in which Dr Al-Haddad was named. A correction published in the Sunday Times yesterday (16 August 2015) clarified that Dr Al-Haddad, a British-based Islamic scholar, commentator and jurist, had not praised Osama Bin Laden nor justified the killing of innocent civilians by terrorists as “collateral damage”, as suggested in the article. The correction also clarified that Dr Al Haddad had not been banned from speaking at LSE in 2012 (as also reported). Dr Al-Haddad was represented by David Mitchell (instructed by Saracens solicitors).
