Pupillage & Tenancy

Ely Place maintains a policy of gradual expansion. Chambers is conveniently located in close proximity to the Law Courts and the Inns of Court. The nearest tube stations are Chancery Lane, Farringdon and Blackfriars.

Chambers currently offers one funded pupillage per year during which a pupil can expect a friendly, vibrant and supportive environment with exposure to a wide variety of civil work. Applications for Third Six pupils will occasionally be considered, but only after advertisement.

Chambers is not currently a member of the OLPAS Scheme. Those wishing to apply should send a CV and cover letter to the Pupillage Committee by 30th April, the year preceding the commencement of the pupillage. Applications by e-mail will not be accepted.

Selected applicants will be offered first round interviews in June. Every effort is made to ensure that the interview panel includes barristers of varying seniority and where possible a newly qualified barrister will be included on the panel to enable applicants to get a ''recent'' view of pupillage.

Those offered pupillage with Chambers will typically have separate pupil masters for each six. Chambers is committed to the Free Representation Unit and it is expected that pupils in their first six would make every effort to participate in FRU. Second six pupils must be of a sufficient calibre to handle their own court work.

Four of our pupils have become tenants in the last three years. The decision on tenancy is taken by Chambers as a whole and will include soundings from both the clerks and instructing solicitors. Chambers has an equal opportunities and strict anti-discriminatory policy.

Should applicants have any further questions please call Carol Belford - Chambers' Administrator -  on 020 7400 9600.

Chambers regrets to announce that it is unable to offer any mini-pupillages before January 2011. Applications for mini-pupillage should be made to Carol Belford. This should be in the form of a C.V. and covering letter in hard copy. Applicants for mini-pupillages must have at least started the second year of their degree. Chambers can only accommodate a limited number of mini-pupils and so applications should be made well in advance of requested dates. While a mini-pupillage is not a pre-requisite for pupillage it is certainly encouraged. However, the fact that individuals have not been mini-pupils with Chambers will not prejudice their application for pupillage. Please note that Mini-pupillages are not funded by chambers.

Insofar as possible, mini-pupillages will be tailor made to suit the pupil, but they are unlikely to last for more than one week. In addition, applicants are discouraged from applying until after their first year of legal education. Chambers may introduce a formal selection process in the future.
